Marriage as a capstone
In Cheap Sex, on p. 145 of my copy:
...marriage is in the throes of deinstitutionalization, as sociologist Andrew Cherlin has detailed.
It is a capstone now rather than a foundation. It is an achievement attained by two independent individuals, not a shelter ducked into wherein two are dependent upon each other.
